Forfar booked their place in the second round of the Ramsdens Cup at 10-man East Fife's expense.
The hosts took the lead when Omar Kader slotted home, before doubling their advantage through Stuart Malcolm.
East Fife pulled one back from the spot when Liam Buchanan scored after being upended by Darren Hill.
But the visitors were reduced to 10 men when Gary Thom was sent off for a stray elbow.
