Colchester bounced back from their League Cup humbling by Peterborough to maintain their 100% start in League One with a 1-0 victory against Port Vale.
Gavin Massey scored the only goal, turning in the rebound after Vale's Chris Neal had denied Jabo Ibehre.
Neal was the busier of the two goalkeepers, keeping out efforts from Massey and Freddie Sears, who also hit a post in the first half.
Chris Lines and captain Doug Loft had Vale's best chances but shot wide.

Colchester United manager Joe Dunne told BBC Essex:
"It was a good win today, we started the game exceptionally well. The onus was on the front four to create, and I thought we saw that in the first 20-30 minutes.
"All we were short of was a couple more goals, but overall I was pleased with the victory.
"The message to the players was just keep believing, you've got to keep creating chances. Once we scored the goal I thought we could win.
"I thought some of the football in the first half was great, we've got some of the best movement I think I've seen within our club and I'm really excited about the future."
