Capital One Cup: Cardiff's away tie is "tricky" says Tommy Smith

Midfielder Tommy Smith says Cardiff City face a "tricky" Capital One Cup tie away to Accrington Stanley.

The Championship winners, who were promoted to the Premier League, travel to the League Two side in the second round in the week commencing 26 August.

Accrington came from behind to beat Championship side Middlesbrough 2-1 in the first round of the Capital One Cup.

"It will be quite a tricky tie, they had a good win in the last round beating Middlesbrough," said Smith.

"It's a tricky one, but one to look forward to."

Smith, 33, is one of the few players in the Bluebirds squad to have Premier League experience, having played for Watford, QPR and Portsmouth in English football's top flight.

But Smith has dismissed the notion that Cardiff will sacrifice their participation in the cup competitions and make Premier League survival their priority.

"The Premier League is about momentum and if you have a bit of a run going and you have a midweek cup game it is important to go out and feature strongly," said Smith.

"It's about putting out good teams and trying to keep the momentum going.

"It's a question you probably have to ask the manager, but I imagine some of the squad players might be used. It's often that way with Premier League teams with bigger squads."

Cardiff have endured a mixed pre-season, having drawn 1-1 with Cheltenham Town, losing to Brentford 3-2 and recording a 1-0 win over Italian side Cheivo Verona at home last Saturday.

The Bluebirds last pre-season friendly is against Spanish outfit Athletic Bilbao at the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday before their Premier League opener away to West Ham on Saturday, 17 August.

"It has been a long tough pre-season," said Smith.

"We have a tough game against Bilbao, which is our last friendly, and then we are looking forward to the West Ham away game.

"Everybody is looking forward to that and the buzz is building up now. We are prepared."
