Wrexham set for Conference Premier promotion bid, says Barr

Assistant manager Billy Barr says Wrexham are ready for another bid to get promoted from the Conference Premier.

Wrexham have seen their dream of a return to the Football League end in the play-offs for the last three years.

They kick off against Welling United at the Racecourse.

"I just hope we can have something similar to what we have had in the last three years, but coming out on top at the end of it," said Barr.

"Hopefully, we get off to a good start and that will take us through."

The Welsh side did beat Grimsby in an FA Trophy shootoutexternal-link in March at Wembley, but the club's second appearance at the home of English football, a month later, saw them fail to win promotion.

Fellow Welsh club Newport County emerged as 2-0 victors and secured their return to the Football League after an absence of 25 years.

Barr says Wrexham are focused on their fight to win promotion but is aware they face some real challengers.

"You have to look at the clubs with money - Forest Green and Luton," said Barr.

"Forest Green have spent on three new strikers, all prolific in their own way and Luton are the biggest club in the league with a big fan base.

"So, you look at those two and then Grimsby, Kidderminster and Cambridge and you always get a surprise team in the mix too."

Striker Brett Ormerod will be missing with a fractured hand and he is joined by Dean Keates and Jay Colbeck on the sidelines.

Conference South champions Welling are back in the top flight of non-League football after 13 years and it is their first visit to the Racecourse.
