York 0-0 Hartlepool

Hartlepool picked up their first point of the League Two campaign with an eventful goalless draw at York.

The visitors had a penalty claim for a foul on Steve Howard waved away, with a free-kick outside the box awarded.

York could have gone ahead when Tom Allan beat keeper Scott Flinders, only to see his header scrambled off the line by Neil Austin.

Andy Monkhouse went close for Pools late on but Chris Smith was on hand to clear his header off the line.

York City manager Nigel Worthington told BBC Radio York:

"It was a real battle, a real competitive 90 minutes and neither team really wanted to give a lot and you are going to get those games.

"As I just said to the players there's a lot of commitment, a lot of effort and a lot of good things happening.

"I think we just need a little more composure around the opposition's 18 yard box.

"We need to get it down we need to put an extra pass in and try and open some things up."
