Annan survived a late rally by Montrose to claim a win, their first of the new campaign.
Both sides hit the woodwork in a competitive first half. Montrose defender Graham Webster struck the angle of the goal with a curling effort before Annan midfielder Alistair Love's 20-yard half-volley crashed off the bar.
Annan did take the lead on the hour when Kenny McKay latched onto a Peter Bradley through ball and slotted home.
Athletic doubled their advantage 15 minutes from time as Steven Black met a Love corner with his head.
Gary Wood pulled one back for the visitors from the penalty spot with four minutes to go but Annan were not to be denied.
