Manchester City are set to sign Atletico Madrid defender Martin Demichelis for a reported £4.2m.
The 32-year-old Argentina international only joined the Spanish side from Malaga on a free transfer in July.
But Atletico are set to sign Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld, 24, paving the way for Demichelis to leave.
City need defensive cover with injured captain Vincent Kompany sidelined for several weeks with a groin injury.
Demichelis played under City boss Manuel Pellegrini at Malaga and River Plate and featured at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Chilean Pellegrini, who took charge at the Etihad Stadium in June, has already spent almost £90m on four signings, with midfielder Fernandinho joining for £30m, winger Jesus Navas arriving for £14.9m and forwards Stevan Jovetic and Alvaro Negredo costing £22m and £20m respectively.
