Adam Cunnington's first-half goal ensured leaders Cambridge extended their unbeaten run to eight games by beating Gateshead.
Cambridge took the lead when debutant Kwesi Appiah played in Cunnington to fire in from close range.
Colin Larkin went close to equalising and was only prevented by a stunning save from Chris Maxwell.
The U's have now kept six clean sheets for the first time since the 1968-69 season.
