Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray has backed Jacob Butterfield and Kei Kamara to build on their debuts in Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Ipswich Town.
Butterfield, 23, started the match in the absence of Josef Varga following his deadline day move from Norwich.
Kamara, 29, was introduced as a second-half substitute after his switch from US side Sporting Kansas City.
"They'll be fine for us over the longer piece, they've got to settle into their roles," Mowbray told BBC Tees.
"It was difficult for us all because we lost, I'm sure they will contribute as the season unfolds."
