Match ends, Burton Albion 0, Southend United 1.
Freddie Eastwood earned victory for Southend with an injury-time goal against 10-man Burton.
Burton keeper Jordan Pickford produced a fine save to deny Cauley Woodrow before the hosts had striker Blly Kee sent off for a second bookable offence.
Alex MacDonald went close with a header and substitute Matt Palmer hit a post as Burton pushed for an opener.
But late on substitute Eastwood struck with a deflected 15-yard shot that bounced in off a post.
VIEW FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Burton Albion manager Gary Rowett told BBC Radio Derby
"I'm sick for the players. I thought second half, in all fairness, we had more chances than them and more shots than them. Their keeper has made more saves than ours.
"I felt as though we were certainly going to see the game out for a point. I just felt we had a two or three-minute spell where we got a bit carried away.
"Even the stewards were throwing the ball back with 89 minutes gone, and you think just calm down, settle down, let's keep our shape"
Southend United manager Phil Brown told BBC Essex:
"I think you've got to give Burton a lot of credit. Their second-half performance was very resilient, very hard working and it was tough to break them down.
"I couldn't tell you what formation we were playing at the end. We threw all our eggs in one basket.
"It was credit to Freddie (Eastwood) with the strike, but we just didn't move the ball quick enough in the second half to cause Burton problems."
