Shrewsbury Town 2-0 Sheffield United

Nigel Clough tasted defeat for the first time as Sheffield United manager as the Blades lost at Shrewsbury.

Joe Jacobson put the hosts ahead on 39 minutes with a brilliant 30-yard shot into the top corner.

Clough sent on Febian Brandy at the break but he was sent off just 12 minutes later for shoving Town substitute Connor Goldson in the face.

The home side made the extra man count when Goldson played in Liam McAlinden, who smashed into the roof of the net.

That was the on-loan Wolves striker's second goal in five appearances in his month at the Meadow, as Town ended a run of just one point out of a possible nine.

VIEW FROM THE DRESSING ROOM

Shrewsbury Town manager Graham Turner told BBC Radio Shropshire:

"It was a hard earned three points.

"The team we were playing were decent so it's been a great afternoon's work.

"We need to take good points from upcoming matches, so we've got off to a good start."

Sheffield United manager Nigel Clough told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"Very disappointed with the result. I thought the performance was not too bad at times.

"We did a lot of good things and conceded a wonder goal in the first half when we were on top.

"The indiscipline in the second half cost us and we kept plugging away with 10 men. I thought the attitude was right, even with 10 men."
