Morecambe 0-3 Southend United

Southend United eased into round two of the FA Cup at the expense of fellow League Two side Morecambe.

The Shrimpers went 2-0 up inside nine minutes at the Globe Arena, both goals coming from Anthony Straker.

He first bundled in Kevan Hurst's cross and then found the net with the help of a hefty deflection that deceived home goalkeeper Barry Roche.

Ryan Leonard's long-range effort sealed victory, while Chris McCready and Andy Wright went close for Morecambe.

VIEW FROM THE DRESSING ROOM

Morecambe manager Jim Bentley told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"It's disappointing and it's not acceptable. I was brought up on cup games and really looking forward to them.

"You have that dream of getting to the third round and hopefully getting a big tie, but we haven't done enough.

"I'll hold my hands up when we've got it wrong and we got it wrong today - not just in the first 10 minutes, but the warm-up was slack and lethargic and we didn't go about our business the right way."

Southend United manager Phil Brown told BBC Essex:

"We knew it was going to be tough. Jim [Bentley] set his team out exactly the way we expected him too. Physical, decent football, get it into the front man early, ask questions of the defenders.

"I think we answered all the questions. I think the team looked forceful in the first half.

"We lost our way playing wise in the second half. That was down to Morecambe, they made a game of it. They put a little bit of pressure on us from set pieces.

"But we stood up to if it manfully. I was delighted to get the clean sheet."
