Steven Taylor: Newcastle defender sorry for tweet racism controversy

Steven Taylor

Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor has apologised after sparking a racism controversy on social media.

He was responding to team-mate Massadio Haidara, who teased him on Twitter about his attempts to learn French.

Taylor responded with the message: "It's always good to see you guys smiling." He attached a picture showing stereotypes of black people, including someone in an afro wig.

French defender Haidara has dismissed it as "banter".

Taylor is one of Newcastle's longest-serving players but has only managed one appearance this season, against Manchester City, where he was sent off.

Since then, injury has prevented him from regaining his place in the team.
