England humbled by Hungary in 1953

On 25 November 1953, England faced Hungary in an international match in front of crowd of 105,000 supporters at Wembley Stadium.

Hungary were the world's number one ranked team, the Olympic champions and on a run of 24 unbeaten games. England had never lost to foreign opponents at Wembley and were convinced that they were still the best team in the world.

Hungary won the match 6-3 and England were shown to be technically and tactically inferior. The result rocked English football and led to a review of the antiquated training and tactics used by the England team.
