2014 Fifa World Cup: Gary Lineker's guide to the eight seeds

England have been drawn in Group D for the 2014 World Cup, meaning they will face seeded team Uruguay as well as Italy and Costa Rica.

Hosts Brazil are in Group A, reigning world and European champions Spain are in Group B and three-time champions Germany are in Group G.

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker, speaking before the draw was made, takes a closer look at the eight seeded national teams:

Group A - Brazil

Gary Lineker's verdict: "Statistically, one in three hosts win the World Cup - and you would hardly bet against Brazil next summer. They have excellent players, of course, albeit without the proliferation of world-class stars that have graced the very best Brazilian sides."

Group B - Spain

Sergio Ramos

Gary Lineker's verdict: "Spain have won the last three major tournaments they have entered, so you have to fancy them! The only thing that's stacked against them in my view is history - no European team has won the World Cup in South America."

Group C - Colombia

Gary Lineker's verdict: "In Radamel Falcao they have one of the great strikers of recent times and there's no doubt they will benefit if they end up playing most of their games in the hotter regions."

Group D - Uruguay

Luis Suarez

Gary Lineker's verdict: "I wouldn't be surprised to see them reach the quarter-finals but they will be hard pushed to manage a repeat of their fourth-place finish in 2010."

Group E - Switzerland

Granit Xhaka

Gary Lineker's verdict: "Switzerland are improving, but this World Cup may come too soon for their new generation of talent to really shine."

Group F - Argentina

Lionel Messi

Gary Lineker's verdict: "Argentina are a team I fancy quite strongly. There are possibly question marks over central defence and the goalkeeper Sergio Romero, but with so much attacking talent they can certainly win the World Cup."

Group G - Germany

Bastian Schweinsteiger

Gary Lineker's verdict: "Germany are one of the big favourites and I think they are the only European team other than Spain who can win the World Cup next summer."

Group H - Belgium

Marouane Fellaini

Gary Lineker's verdict: "The Brazil World Cup will be their first major tournament for a while and, although experience always helps, younger players tend to have no fear. A quarter-final place would justify their seeding."
