Woking 1-0 Braintree Town

Joe McNerney's goal gave Woking victory over Braintree and continued their move away from the relegation zone.

He struck when the visitors failed to clear, turning in the ball from the right-hand side of the six-yard box.

The margin would have been greater but for Braintree goalkeeper Nick Hamman, who kept out efforts from Josh Payne, John Goddard and Keiran Murtagh.

Bernard Mensah forced a save from Sam Beasant at the other end, but the Cards secured a fourth win in five.

VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM

Woking manager Garry Hill told BBC Surrey:

"You have to make sure that you battle TO compete against Braintree, because they are a big, strong physical side.

"I felt we started very brightly. But you have to turn round and see the commitment and desire shown by the players, and even more so when you haven't played in 16 days.

"Most of chances were one way and they ended up defending for long periods of time and overall we were worthy winners. "

"You come into this week and you haven't signed any players and I had an opportunity last night but it didn't happen.

"I felt I was going to be rushing into a deal for the sake of making it happen and if you've got people who haven't been in the team for a while asking me to give them an opportunity. I had to trust in them and be fair to the whole side and everyone who came into the game did very well."

Braintree Town manager Alan Devonshire told BBC Essex:

"That's the poorest we've played all season. I'm totally distraught and embarrassed abut that performance.

"No disrespect to Woking, we've played against better sides and we've made them look world-beaters.

"We were getting bullied over the park. We were poor. I apologise to the fans.

"The referee was poor but we were worse than him. I'm gutted. That's our worst performance by far."
