Tuesday night's League One game between Colchester United and Shrewsbury Town has been postponed, just four hours before the scheduled kick-off.
The playing surface at the Weston Homes Community Stadium was inspected at 09:00 GMT on Tuesday morning.
But a second pitch inspection was ordered later in the day.
The final decision to call off the game was not taken until match referee Garry Sutton, from Lincolnshire, had a further look in mid-afternoon.
The match would have been Shrewsbury caretaker manager Mike Jackson's second game in charge, after making a losing start with a 3-1 defeat at Swindon on Saturday.
The next scheduled fixture for Shrewsbury, who have lost their last four matches, is now at home to Brentford on Saturday, when Colchester are due to travel to Peterborough.
Colchester, who have not played since winning 4-2 at Carlisle on 18 January, will be without on-loan defender Luke Garbutt, who has been recalled by parent club Everton.
