Wycombe Wanderers 1-0 Chesterfield

Max Kretzschmar's first-half penalty gave struggling Wycombe Wanderers a vital three points against top of the table Chesterfield.

Kretzschmar put the Chairboys ahead from the spot after Ian Evett handled Matt McClure's cross.

The visitors almost levelled after the break but Evett's headed effort was judged offside.

Gary Roberts fired from distance late on but Matt Ingram comfortably saved to give Wycombe their first win in ten.

The Spireites were without manager Paul Cook for the second half after he was sent to the stands on half-time for dissent.

Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth told BBC Three Counties Radio:

"I haven't calmed down yet and I'm so pleased. The fans were absolutely superb today; people have backed me.

"We've had a testing week with a lot of of stuff off the pitch but on the pitch the lads have been brilliant.

"Traning has gone superb; we've changed it up a little bit, and every player out there deserves that win today. I don't think anyone could go away today and say that Wycombe didn't deserve that win.

"You ask a proper Wycombe fan, who gets behind us every week, and they know this [win] has been coming.

"The young kid Anthony Jeffrey made his debut and he ran out of steam because he was so nervous and got involved in everything. I just thought that everyone on the pitch was superb."

Chesterfield manager Paul Cook told BBC Radio Sheffield:

Post-match: Chesterfield boss Cook

"We had no chances, we had no quality in the game at all.

"Like I said to the lads in there, it was like we had a hangover from the cup tie [Johnstone's Paint Trophy northern area final against Fleetwood], and we suffered with it. We must come out of that quickly, because that's not us today.

"I've got great respect for my players, but as I just said to them there, that was one of our most disappointing days since I've come in."
