Barry Smith secured his first win as Alloa Athletic manager as Scottish Championship bottom side Greenock Morton slipped further adrift.
The only goal of the game came in the first half when Graeme Holmes set up Ryan McCord to fire home.
Dougie Imrie headed straight at goalkeeper Scott Bain as the hosts searched in vain for a leveller.
And Morton's day worsened when Imrie was sent off in stoppage time for serious foul play.
Defeat means Kenny Shiels' side now trail Cowdenbeath by 12 points with 11 matches to play.
