Bolton Wanderers 0-2 Brighton

Will Buckley

Will Buckley scored twice as Brighton continued their match towards the Championship play-offs with an accomplished victory over at Bolton.

The 24-year-old winger struck in either half as Brighton moved to within a point of Nottingham Forest, who occupy the final play-off spot in sixth.

Lee Chung-Yong went closest for Wanderers when he put the ball in the net but was ruled to be offside.

The result also ended Bolton's four-match unbeaten sequence.

Brighton, who beat Bolton 3-1 at home earlier in the season, threatened first when Leonardo Ulloa's cross almost unintentionally crept into the top-right corner before Bolton goalkeeper Adam Bogdan parried it.

Bolton went close when Lee and Lukas Jutkiewicz combined in the Seagulls area but defender Lewis Dunk managed to block striker Jutkiewicz's effort.

The visitors took the lead in the 13th minute when Ulloa curled a ball into the box at pace.

Buckley connected perfectly at point blank range and although Bogdan somehow managed to parry the ball, Wanderers were sluggish to the rebound and Buckley fired into the bottom corner on the turn.

That forced Wanderers into a more attack-minded approach and Lee shot from range but it was tipped over by Tomasz Kuszczak.

The former Manchester United keeper, who is yet to sign a new contract with Brighton, was then on hand to save David Wheater's bullet header from a corner delivered by South Korea international Lee.

The hosts came even closer to equalising just before half-time. Medo Kamara's free-kick from just outside the box clipped the top of the wall and hit the cross bar, to the relief of Kuszack.

The Trotters came out on the front foot again after the break and, with Brighton defending for their lives, it looked as though they had grabbed the equaliser.

Lee got a shot away in a crowded area which deflected off Joe Mason into the back of the net but the assistant referee had his flag up for offside.

That disallowed goal seemed to deflate the home team and in the 65th minute Oscar Garcia's Brighton side doubled their lead.

A mistake from Kamara in midfield put Buckley one-on-one with Bogdan and he curled the ball into the bottom-left corner of the net.

Bolton had a few half chances late on, but never really threatened to get back in the game, with Brighton securing their eighth clean sheet in their last eight wins.

Bolton manager Dougie Freedman said:

"We're disappointed with the result but if you break the game down it boiled down to not taking our opportunities.

"I think that Brighton had the rub of the green but they were two really fantastic finishes from them and you have to take your hat off to them.

"The simple facts were when we got the ball into the box we just didn't take our opportunities."

Brighton assistant head coach Nathan Jones said:

"The target is to finish as high as we possibly can. Realistically, we're very pleased of the position that we are in.

"We had a very difficult start but we've managed to rally and we're in a good position.

"We're not getting carried away, we've got 11 games left."
