Match ends, Reading 1, Barnsley 3.
Reading suffered a shock home defeat against lowly Barnsley to end their unbeaten five-match run and dent their Championship play-off hopes.
The Tykes went ahead through a fine finish from captain Stephen Dawson, but Reading levelled before half-time when Pavel Pogrebnyak converted a penalty after he was fouled by Kelvin Etuhu.
Reuben Noble-Lazarus chipped the away side back in front, and Dale Jennings's 25-yard strike sealed the victory.
The win moved Barnsley off the bottom.
Danny Wilson's side arrived at the Madejski Stadium with the worst away record in the Championship, with just seven points from a possible 51.
But they started the better, with Liam Lawrence driving wide from long distance and Dawson forcing a decent save from home goalkeeper Alex McCarthy with a fierce shot.
And it was no surprise when they went ahead in the 16th minute. Chris O'Grady took advantage of a poor back-pass from Chris Gunter and set up Dawson to score with a cleverly placed effort.
Reading levelled four minutes later when skipper Jobi McAnuff released Pogrebnyak, who strode forward before Etuhu halted his progress illegally. The Russian striker coolly slotted in the spot-kick for his 10th goal of the season.
The hosts upped the pace before half-time but Barnsley scored twice in four minutes after the interval to end the contest.
First Tomasz Cywka flicked a pass on to Noble-Lazarus, a half-time substitute, and his precise chip glided in over McCarthy.
And victory was sealed when Jennings cut in unchallenged from the left to fire home from distance.
Reading manager Nigel Adkins: "On the back of a good win away to Birmingham, that was a great opportunity for us tonight.
"We were playing a team well below us in the league and yet we failed to capitalise on that. We were just not good enough.
"We're still in the play-off race but we were very poor this evening. No one can hide away from that fact."
Barnsley manager Danny Wilson:
"Of course we can stay up
"When you witness a performance like that, we must have a great chance.
"We fully deserved the win and it will give our confidence a great boost. All in all, it was a superb performance."
