Jonson Clarke-Harris notched a brace and a valuable three points for Oldham at Bradford as they took a significant step towards safety.
James Wesolowski put Athletic ahead before the hosts equalised when Adam Reach fired home from close range.
Clarke-Harris put Oldham ahead again on half-time then slotted in another with a cool finish after the break.
Gary Jones pulled a goal back for Bradford in stoppage-time with a low shot from the edge of the box.
Oldham manager Lee Johnson told BBC Radio Manchester:
"Certainly not perfection because I thought our defensive work rate and work ethic and commitment to the cause was superb.
"I'm disappointed with the two goals but funnily enough, apart from that, everything else defensively was superb.
"I thought we were slick on the break at times. For me, the way we improve now is by just calming down.
"We've worked so hard. Certainly moving forward we could be a strong side."
