Match ends, Southend United 0, AFC Wimbledon 1.
A Jack Midson penalty moved AFC Wimbledon a step closer to securing their status in League Two and shocked play-off hopefuls Southend.
Former Shrimpers loanee Midson squeezed his second-half spot-kick under Daniel Bentley's body after Kwesi Appiah had been brought down by John Egan.
Appiah had almost opened the scoring before the break but was denied from close range by a fine Bentley save.
Southend rarely threatened and defeat ends their run of three wins in a row.
Phil Brown's side are now just one point above eighth-placed York.
Southend United manager Phil Brown told BBC Essex:
"I'm bitterly disappointed. It was one of them days where it didn't matter what we tried, it didn't fall for us.
"The effort of the players was there, the organisation was there, the shape of the team was good.
"We've had numerous opportunities, good chances. We've more or less done everything right apart from put the ball in the net.
"We had one of the biggest crowds of the season and couldn't send them home happy."
