Sheffield Wednesday 2-3 Charlton Athletic

Marvin Sordell
Marvin Sordell

Marvin Sordell scored a hat-trick as Charlton fought back from two goals down to beat Sheffield Wednesday and boost their survival hopes.

Wednesday's Atdhe Nuhiu put the hosts, who are 15th, ahead after two minutes and Chris Maguire added a second from Nuhiu's pass five minutes later.

But Sordell finished from Callum Harriott's cross in the 10th minute and equalised two minutes before the break.

Sordell added a third to move Charlton two points above the relegation zone.

Having been in the bottom three on goal difference before kick-off, the Addicks are now 18th in the Championship.

They got off to a poor start in the third minute when Nuhiu volleyed in from a tight angle from Miguel Llera's cross.

The hosts doubled their advantage when Nuhiu broke down the right and crossed for Maguire to curl in from the edge of the area.

But Sordell pulled one back soon after when he made the most of defensive hesitancy from the Owls to guide a shot into the bottom corner.

On-loan Bolton forward Sordell pulled the visitors level just before half-time when he latched on to Harriott's pass and beat Wednesday goalkeeper Chris Kirkland.

Sordell, who had previously only scored four goals this season, completed the comeback when he broke between two Owls defenders and produced a calm finish.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Stuart Gray:

"I said to the players the most important thing is that I don't want people accusing you of having your flip-flops on and you are on the beach.

"Credit to the players we came out of the traps and we go 2-0 up after eight minutes with two well-taken goals.

"We suddenly thought it was going to be a bit easy, we started running with the ball, misplaced passes. I am just so disappointed."

Charlton manager Jose Riga:

"[It was] a big, big step but we have the next game at home. If we can get the same result we will see after where we are.

"We have to finish the work. It will be I hope in the next game or maybe just after that - not too long.

"I have a mission to be able to save Charlton."
