Southend all but secured a play-off place with a win over Accrington.
Ryan Leonard nearly opened the scoring for the home side when he headed John White's right-wing cross just wide.
Southend did take the lead in the second half when Barry Corr fired into the bottom corner from 12 yards after being teed up by Will Atkinson.
Accrington almost snatched a point but substitute Shay McCartan's volley was tipped wide by Shrimpers goalkeeper Daniel Bentley.
Southend United manager Phil Brown told BBC Essex:
"They are a difficult team to play against. They come with a physical tactic and you've got to try and beat it.
"I'm not saying it's ever going to be pretty against them. I sensed one or two frustrations from the crowd, but they've got to be patient.
"It's our sixth clean sheet in eight games, we've conceded two goals in those eight games and one of those was a penalty.
"Defensively we still look quite solid although we had one or two harum-scarum moments."
