Promotion hopefuls Grimsby warmed up for the Conference Premier play-offs with a goalless draw against Braintree.
Both sides created early chances, with Daniel Sparkes going close from a free-kick for the hosts and Andi Thanoj shooting wide for the Mariners.
Home keeper Nick Hamann was kept busy early in the second half, saving twice from Alex Rodman and Craig Disley.
In a hard-fought contest there were six bookings, but despite 25 shots on goal neither side could snatch a winner.
Grimsby Town manager Paul Hurst told BBC Radio Humberside:
"Overall I obviously changed it round a little bit but the important thing for me is I haven't picked up any injuries and no-one got sent off because at one stage the way players were getting booked that was a concern.
"I thought we started the second-half really well to be honest we had a couple of attacks, a couple of shots at the keeper at the near post and he showed good hands.
"One thing I will say is we're playing the form team there's no doubt. That's twelve games unbeaten for them (Gateshead) and hopefully they're due a defeat. "
