Dundee top-scorer Peter MacDonald scored a goal either side of half-time against Alloa to help send his team to the top of the Scottish Championship.
Athletic's Graeme Holmes had an effort saved by Kyle Letheren when through on goal before Dundee's Christian Nade volleyed wide of an open goal.
MacDonald nodded Kevin McBride's corner beyond Scott Bain and scored from the spot after Darryl Meggatt handled.
Craig Beattie added a third with a neat run and finish.
With Hamilton Accies stumbling to a surprise 4-1 defeat away to Dumbarton, Dundee are now two points ahead with one game remaining.
That comes at home to fifth-placed Sons next Saturday.
