John Sheridan says it is "brilliant" that his Plymouth Argyle side open their home with a derby against Devon rivals Exeter City.

The Grecians visit Home Park on Saturday, 16 August, a week after Plymouth's opening game at newly-promoted Cambridge United.

"I think it's a brilliant game," the Argyle manager told BBC Sport.

"There'll be a full house and for the first home game you couldn't ask for any more."

Exeter beat Plymouth at both Home Park and St James Park last season, with Argyle's last victory over their nearest Football League neighbours coming in

Sheridan says the chance to play in such a big game so early in the season will benefit the new additions to his squad.

"Hopefully we can get off to a good start at home," he explained. "It'll be a very tough game after they beat us twice last season.

"There'll probably be 14,000 at the game so it'll be great for the new players to get the atmosphere and it's important to get off to a good start."
