Switzerland defender Steve von Bergen has been ruled out of the World Cup after breaking a cheekbone in the 5-2 defeat by France.

Von Bergen had blood pouring from a cut under his eye after he was accidently kicked in the face by France striker Olivier Giroud in the sixth minute.

The 31-year-old was taken to hospital in Salvador.
