Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson has said his side's confidence ahead of last season was misguided.
"We were bold as brass at the beginning of last season, more confident than we would normally be," Ferguson told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.
"We laid out big ambitions at the start of the season."
Peterborough finished 2013-14 in sixth place and missed out on an instant return to the Championship, in a campaign chairman Darragh MacAnthony described as an "epic failure".
"Next season it's important that we don't set too many targets, and try to do as best we can," said Ferguson.
"That's not saying we won't get promoted, but it's just us using our common sense."
"I prefer signing my own players rather than getting players on loan," Ferguson said.
"All the players have come back in great shape."
