The damage to Leigh Sports Village also leaves rugby league club Leigh Centurions with a problem fulfilling their Championship fixtures

Wigan have moved their 11 July friendly with Walsall away from Leigh Sports Village because of damage to the pitch caused by an Elton John concert.

John's concert took place on 21 June, and the Latics' game will be now be played at the club's training ground.

"We hoped the pitch would've recovered, but we have had to make this decision," said chief executive Jonathan Jackson.

"This is in no way a reflection on Leigh Sports Village and we intend to maintain a close relationship."

Wigan Athletic share their DW Stadium with rugby league outfit Wigan Warriors, whose season is currently just beyond its halfway point.

They could also be forced to postpone a friendly against Besiktas on 15 July at the same venue.

The game with Walsall will have no supporters in attendance.
