Derby County 1-1 Ipswich Town

Christophe Berra
Berra has scored three goals in three in his last three games

Derby County dropped their first points at home this season as Christophe Berra secured a draw for Ipswich Town.

Chris Martin stabbed the opener home for Derby after Dean Gerken saved his initial header and Johnny Russell had an effort cleared off the line.

Centre-back Berra headed the equaliser from a Paul Anderson free-kick.

Rams goalkeeper Lee Grant denied Anderson and Teddy Bishop, while Martin and Leon Best both had chances to win it for the home side.

The draw extends Ipswich's unbeaten run at Derby to seven meetings, dating back to December 2008.

Back to the beginning for McClaren
Before officially taking charge of Derby County, Steve McClaren helped inspire the Rams to a 4-4 draw at home against Ipswich. Derby were training 4-1 at the break when former England boss went into the dressing room to speak to his new players.

Derby will anxiously await news of Republic of Ireland international Jeff Hendrick, who was taken to hospital with a serious looking injury to his right arm.

Martin got Derby off to a strong start with his fourth goal of the season, taking advantage after Luke Hyam failed to clear Jamie Ward's cross.

Gerken reacted well to deny last season's top scorer for Derby and Jonathan Parr was on the line to foil Russell, but former Norwich City man Martin eventually took his second chance by turning the ball home on the back post.

Derby had a penalty shout turned down when Hendrick appeared to be caught by Berra, with the midfielder replaced minutes later after falling awkwardly.

While the visitors struggled to seriously threaten in the first half, they improved after the break, with Anderson delivering the free-kick for Berra to nod home before then directing a shot into the legs of Grant.

Hot-shot Berra
Berra's third goal in his last three matches for Ipswich takes his tally at the club to eight from 51 games. He failed to score in 154 appearances for Wolves between 2009 and 2013.

The former Burnley and Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper was tested again moments later, tipping Bishop's long-range effort over the bar.

Derby survived and went close to hitting back immediately, only for Martin to nod a Cyrus Christie cross over.

Richard Keogh did well to throw himself in front a stinging Alex Henshall shot for the visitors and Martin cleared a looping Daryl Murphy header, but it was the Rams that pressed hardest for a late winner.

Martin dragged a shot off target and had another effort deflect wide, either side of Best's headed effort over the bar from a Craig Bryson corner.

Derby manager Steve McClaren: "I felt it was a game overall we should have won. We probably caused our own problems - after we got the first goal we seemed to stop.

"Jeff [Hendrick] was six minutes down [injured] and it kind of killed the game in the first half.

"And we started the second poorly, so it was not a consistent performance throughout the 90 minutes. Jeff has gone off to hospital with a shoulder injury. Hopefully it's not a dislocation but I don't know."

Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy: "We started passing the ball to people in blue shirts in the second half. We didn't rush it and kept the ball better in the second half and we got in some good positions."
