Aldershot Town 2-1 Grimsby Town

Brett Williams
Brett Williams took his tally to five goals this season after netting a brace

Brett Williams hit a brace as Aldershot held on to hand Grimsby their first Conference defeat of the season.

Grimsby dangerman Lenell John-Lewis was sent off for two yellow card offences in the first half.

Williams lashed in the opening goal, firing in from Dan Fitchett's square ball, before racing clear to slot home his second from another Fitchett pass.

Grimsby hit back through Scott Neilson's superb volley, but Shots held on for their third win of the season.

Aldershot manager Andy Scott told BBC Surrey:

"The sending-off is a major factor, and we said to the lads at half-time that we are going to take the game to them and try and win it. The second-half performance for half an hour was brilliant.

"We scored two very good goals and created some excellent chances.

"It was a good game to watch because they kept on going through it and it was entertaining."

Grimsby manager Paul Hurst told BBC Radio Humberside:

"What I can say is my players put in a really good performance.

"Credit to the players because Aldershot were hanging on at the end and at 2-0 down it would have been very easy to give in and accept defeat. The players never did that.

"It has been a real effort from the players and I think there is a lot of room for optimism with us."
