Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes praises his side's character

Derek McInnes was delighted with the Dons' win that puts them in eighth place in the Premiership table

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes praised the fighting spirit of his players after a 2-0 win against Partick Thistle.

Nicky Low and Niall McGinn scored the goals for the Dons in a Premiership match they dominated.

And, after going down 1-0 to St Johnstone last week, their response pleased the manager.

"I'm delighted with the players' application; they've really worked hard. They suffered after last week but the response is always there," he said.

"Today was a good game for us to go and show what we're all about and we certainly did that.

"Thistle are a good side, but I thought we thoroughly deserved our win. Other than the first 10 minutes or so, after we got a better line, we were able to put more pressure on them and I thought we were excellent from then on in.

"We really played to a good level of performance. Two halves are never the same, but, at the break, we asked for the same application and to impose ourselves on the second half and the two goals lit up the game.

"Nicky's was a fantastic strike, and McGinn's even better."

McInnes was particularly complimentary of his 22-year-old Low and Jonny Hayes, who had been an injury doubt prior to kick-off.

"Nicky's got a lot of qualities that are infectious," he said.

"He loves his football and he goes after the game. He brings in quality from the left side and gives us good balance. We thought long and hard about the team today and thankfully Jonny was passed fit.

"He had a little hip problem and now he's got a little ankle problem to go with it. Fair play to Nicky coming in and playing his part in a very good win for us."

And, summing up, he added: "We've got to go and win fights first and foremost, and we have to give ourselves every chance to win, and I thought we did that today."
