Wycombe stretched their unbeaten league run to five games as they condemned Plymouth to back-to-back defeats.
Matt McClure twice went close for Wycombe before they took the lead when Paul Hayes nodded in from Joe Jacobson's corner.
Plymouth had a penalty appeal turned down in the second half as they pushed in vain for an equaliser.
Defeat sees Plymouth drop to 13th, while Wycombe rise to third with their fifth win of their league campaign.
Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth told BBC Three Counties Radio:
"It's a great result and we'd have probably taken a point from a place like this on a Tuesday night.
"We're going to keep going to the survival total of points and then see where we go from there.
"It is a huge pitch, and it is difficult to press for 90 minutes sometimes.
"The players deserve all the credit, they're working so hard for me and are very honest. We've got a fantastic chairman too."
