Port Vale 0-3 Bristol City

Port Vale v Bristol City
Bristol City striker Aaron Wilbraham has seven goals for the season after his brace at Port Vale

Leaders Bristol City extended their unbeaten League One start by inflicting a sixth straight defeat on Port Vale.

Tom Pope fired over from 12 yards for Vale before Aaron Wilbraham put Bristol City in front, scrambling in after Aden Flint's header hit the woodwork.

Flint nodded in from close range early in the second half to make it 2-0.

And when Ryan McGivern misjudged a header to his goalkeeper, Wilbraham rounded Chris Neal to seal a fourth consecutive win for the visitors.

Vale manager Micky Adams made a triple change shortly after City's second goal and, although substitutes Byron Moore, Jordan Slew and Mark Marshall impressed, they could not affect the final outcome.

They had been close to an equaliser before half-time when Michael O'Connor tested City goalkeeper Frank Fielding from the edge of the penalty area, while Chris Birchall's header was deflected wide.

Steve Cotterill's City have now won six and drawn two of their eight league games so far this season and are the only unbeaten side left in the third tier.

Vale, meanwhile, have lost six games in a row for the first time since 2008 - and five of those defeats have been in League One, in which they are now kept off the bottom only by neighbours Crewe.

Port Vale manager Micky Adams told BBC Radio Stoke:

"My thoughts and emotions are all over the place, so I don't think that I should be saying much to the players.

"I've tried to be nice and relaxed with them, because I don't want my emotions showing too much so they don't affect them.

"Every individual in that dressing room is good enough, but they're playing without confidence, which is evident.

"Every player can go through a crisis of confidence. It's all about how you get through it that counts. There's no hiding place."

Bristol City defender Aden Flint told BBC Radio Bristol:

"The gaffer said they were going to bomb the ball forward to Tom Pope, and that's basically my bread and butter. I just kept heading it.

"They played onto to me a bit but Derrick Williams, Luke Ayling and Korey Smith have all won headers too.

"It's a team game and we've all done well tonight.

"It's always nice to get a goal and perhaps I could have got another one."
