Paul Dummett celebrates Newcastle's winner at Crystal Palace

Paul Dummett's diving header in the second period of extra time took Newcastle into the League Cup fourth round at the expense of Crystal Palace.

Dwight Gayle's penalty put Palace ahead before Emmanuel Riviere's brace swung the tie in Newcastle's favour.

The visitors were denied victory in normal time when Palace debutant Sullay Kaikai poked in with seconds left.

Newcastle had Mehdi Abeid sent off in the first half of the additional time before Dummett clinched a dramatic win.

The Wales full-back's late intervention sets up a last-16 trip to holders Manchester City, who thumped Championship side Sheffield Wednesday 7-0 in their fourth-round tie.

But more importantly for Magpies boss Alan Pardew, the win could give him some respite from fans angry at their club's poor start to the Premier League season.

Newcastle are bottom of the top flight after taking only three points from their opening five matches.

Newcastle finally enjoying the Riviere
French striker Emmanuel Riviere's two goals were his first for the club. The 24-year-old had not scored in his first five games for Newcastle since arriving from Monaco in the summer

Despite their recent troubles, Pardew's men started positively at Selhurst Park but were unable to find a cutting edge in the opening half-hour.

And they were punished when Premier League rivals Palace, who won their first league game of the season at Everton on Saturday, took the lead.

On-loan Manchester United winger Wilfried Zaha appeared to be going nowhere with a meandering run down the left, before right-back Daryl Janmaat needlessly hacked his shins to concede a penalty.

Gayle struck the spot-kick low into the corner to give Palace the lead against the run of play.

Newcastle deservedly levelled through Riviere's accurate finish, before the £6m summer signing from Monaco side-footed in a penalty after Palace captain Paddy McCarthy brought down Sammy Ameobi.

Gayle headed against the post as Palace rallied and, just as the game appeared to be out of their reach, 19-year-old academy graduate Kaikai came off the bench to send the game into extra time.

Abeid was dismissed after receiving a second yellow card as Palace looked to use their numerical advantage to press for a winner.

Gayle had an acrobatic volley ruled out for offside, but Palace suffered their first loss since Neil Warnock's return as manager when Dummett nodded in Adam Armstrong's cross.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew:

"Anyone who has seen us play this year will know the top of the pitch has been an issue for us.

"We've just not had that cutting edge, so I'm so pleased for Manu [Riviere], he's worked tirelessly this season, and he deserves those goals.

"That will give him a real lift."

Crystal Palace boss Neil Warnock:

"I've only seen Sullay Kaikai a couple of times, but I'd just felt we'd nothing to lose.

"He's always likely to score a goal.

"If young lads do well they deserve a chance."
