Ipswich Town 2-0 Rotherham United

David McGoldrick's goal helped Ipswich move into the play-off positions

Daryl Murphy and David McGoldrick both scored in the opening six minutes as Ipswich made it four consecutive wins with victory over Rotherham.

Murphy grabbed the first when he headed in after keeper Scott Loach had saved Luke Chambers' header.

The Millers were two down when McGoldrick's 25-yard left-foot shot found the net.

Frazer Richardson had a great late chance for United but he blazed over from close range.

Buoyed by three straight wins, Ipswich almost scored just 84 seconds into the game.

Jonathan Parr's deep cross was met first time by Murphy, but his volley was clawed away by former Town stopper Loach at his near post.

But in the third minute they did take the lead. Chambers' header was pushed down, rather than away, by Loach and Murphy nodded in the rebound.

Loach was picking the ball out of his net again after McGoldrick picked up Luke Hyam's short pass and fired in from outside the box.

Christophe Berra forced a save from Loach at the near post while Conor Sammon struck the woodwork after rounding the keeper.

Chambers came to Ipswich's rescue when he deflected Lee Frecklington's shot, which was heading for the net.

And with eight minutes to go Richardson fired over after Dean Gerken had parried Paul Green's deflected free-kick.

The win lifted Mick McCarthy's team into the play-off places, just three points behind leaders and local rivals Norwich.

Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy: "[David] McGoldrick is arguably one of the best strikers in the league. He has two good feet, just one better than the other, and it was some strike.

"September has gone particularly well. We have had a nice bit of momentum, although we have carried a bit of luck."

Rotherham assistant manager Paul Raynor: "We left ourselves with a mountain to climb and we need to look at that. We lost our men and we will look at whether Scott Loach could have done better with the opening goal.

"There were lots of pluses. We just need to find someone who is going to score the goals. And if there is no one in the squad, we will look to bring someone in."
