Bolton Wanderers 0-2 Derby County

Chris Martin
Chris Martin has scored six goals for Derby this season

Striker Chris Martin scored both goals as Derby County secured a 2-0 win at Bolton Wanderers in the Championship.

The 25-year-old, who also missed a penalty, netted the opener on 38 minutes from Cyrus Christie's cross.

The Scotland international added his sixth goal of the season 12 minutes after the break when he drove into the box and fired past Andy Lonergan.

The win moves Steve McClaren's side into sixth place, while Bolton drop into the relegation zone.

It was a third defeat in eight days for Dougie Freedman's side, with angry Wanderers fans turning on the manager and chairman Phil Gartside.

Chants of 'Freedman out' and 'Gartside out' could be heard in the stands as the Trotters slumped to a sixth defeat in nine Championship games.

Martin's first-half strike gave Derby a deserved lead but he had missed from the spot half an hour earlier after Craig Bryson was sent sprawling in the box.

Bolton's Lonergan guessed correctly as Martin fired his penalty towards the keeper's right.

Derby match facts
The Rams have lost just one of six games on the road this season - a 3-2 defeat at Charlton Athletic in August.

The hosts saw Joe Mason's close-range effort turned aside for a corner before Derby resumed control.

Jamie Ward's left-foot curler from 18 yards almost broke the deadlock before Martin struck from six yards.

Bolton were booed off at the break and the jeers intensified after Martin capitalised on some poor defensive work to make it 2-0.

Shortly after two fans ran onto the pitch - one grabbing the corner flag and prancing in front of stewards before being led away.

A few minutes later, another supporter forced a further hold up as he paraded in front of the Nat Lofthouse Stand.

Bolton forward Mason had a late effort disallowed but Wanderers never looked capable of testing Derby.

Derby manager Steve McClaren: "This is management and it can be cruel at times.

"You live and die by results. But Bolton were unlucky at Wolves last week, were terrific at Chelsea in midweek and today we played very well.

"When the pressure is on you need a performance from your players. We have all been in that situation and we all feel for each other.

"I will have a beer with Dougie and hope performances and results improve because he has good players."

Bolton manager Dougie Freedman: "I tried to out-football Derby and I got it horribly wrong. But you cannot legislate for us playing football suicide.

"This job is proving more difficult than I ever thought it would be. But I am not hiding away from it and I will make the tough decisions.

"I am very proud of being the manager of this wonderful football club.

"I will take full responsibility for the results and I got it wrong so I have to look at my performance."
