Bristol City strengthened their position at the top of League One with a dramatic win over MK Dons.

Kieran Agard tapped in a Mark Little header before doubling City's lead from the penalty spot following a foul on him by Dons defender Kyle McFadzean.

Dean Bowditch pulled one back for the visitors, before Benik Afobe equalised following a poor backpass from midfielder Wade Elliott.

Elliott immediately made amends with a driven shot to seal the win for City.

Agard has now scored five goals in six games for the Robins since his summer move from Rotherham, including four in his last two games.

Steve Cotterill's side remain unbeaten in the league this season.

Bristol City manager Steve Cotterill told BBC Radio Bristol:

"If you can try to step out of it, and now I am out of it, it was a fantastic game.

"We worked really hard this week and I felt in the first half we were excellent at what we did. In the second half, our ball retention, for how it's been this season, was poor.

"Every time the turnover happened, we thought that we had to score a goal rather than getting a foothold in the game and getting a little bit of possession.

"If you turn over possession to any team, but especially MK Dons who are renowned for the way they play, you're going to find that you will be chasing around the pitch and using a lot of energy that you don't need to use if you use your composure."

MK Dons manager Karl Robinson told BBC Three Counties Radio:

"I think this is one of the best teams we'll see at this level.

"When you now consider we've been away to Bristol, away to Peterborough and we're still in the mix, the players deserve an awful lot of credit and hopefully we can utilise this and move forward.

"I trust the players against anybody. I think they've showed you all today they're a good side.

"The travelling fans were magnificent and the way they applauded the players off at the end of the game showed how well we did play."
