Wycombe Wanderers 1-0 Cambridge United

Paul Hayes
Hayes (left) has scored three goals in his last four games

Paul Hayes scored his 100th league goal to give Wycombe victory over Cambridge.

After a closely-fought first-half, Harrison Dunk came close to breaking the deadlock for the visitors after the break but his shot from a tight angle went just past the post.

Matt McClure went close for the hosts when his header from Sam Wood's cross came back off the upright.

Striker Hayes, 31, won it from close range after Chris Dunn had saved Paris Cowan-Hall's header.

Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth told BBC Three Counties Radio:

Ainsworth on Wycombe v Cambridge

"Paul Hayes has popped up. It's great having him at Wycombe Wanderers. He comes up at vital times, he's a very experienced, clever player and leads the line well. But everyone worked hard today, it was a real team performance.

"It's a team thing; honesty, togetherness and hard work. We're building on that and, with a chairman like Andrew Howard behind us backing everything we do, it's great to have the freedom to do it.

"We're on the knife edge but at the moment I'm taking every point we can, adding it to our total and seeing where we end up. But I'm not talking about anything until we get our survival points."
