Southend United 1-0 Shrewsbury Town

Southend recorded a fourth straight League Two win over 10-man Shrewsbury.

On-loan Spurs striker Shaq Coulthirst scored the only goal of the game, heading John White's deep cross into the bottom corner in the second minute.

Jean-Louis Akpra Akpro struck the post and James Collins shot inches wide from 25-yards as Shrewsbury responded.

Goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler saved two more headers from Coulthirst before visiting substitute Andy Mangan was sent off late on for two yellow cards.

Southend stay fourth in the table, while Shrewsbury's third defeat in five league games drops them to seventh - five points adrift of the play-off places,

Shrewsbury manager Micky Mellon told BBC Radio Shropshire:

"It was disappointing to lose a goal so early and the manner we lost it. You can't give people free headers from balls lobbed into the box. But that sort of summed up the afternoon.

"We rested the players up on Wednesday and Thursday [after the Capital One Cup win over Norwich]. We stayed overnight in a nice hotel ahead of Southend, so no excuses there.

"But we never really got going. We didn't look a threat enough up front. I'd never say the effort was missing, but being streetwise, working smartly, being more aggressive - that was all missing."
