Cologne 0-2 Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich's Mario Gotze
Gotze scored his third goal in two Bayern Munich games

German champions Bayern Munich remain top of the Bundesliga after Mario Gotze scored one and created another to beat newly-promoted Cologne.

The Germany attacker, who scored the winner in this year's World Cup final, tapped in the opener at the far post.

Then Cologne's Daniel Halfar turned Gotze's delivery into his own net under pressure from David Alaba.

Unbeaten Bayern have taken 14 points from their opening six games as they target their third straight title.

It was their second win against a newly-promoted team in the space of four days, having won 4-0 against previously-unbeaten Paderborn with the help of a Gotze brace.

Pep Guardiola's men deserved their victory against Cologne after controlling the majority of the game, although they were grateful to goalkeeper Manuel Neuer for maintaining their lead shortly before half-time.

The Germany international produced a stunning double save to prevent the home side equalising.

Bayern continued to dominate after the break and were unlucky not to score more than two goals against a team who had only conceded once in their opening five games.

Bayern are two points clear of second-placed Borussia Monchengladbach, who eased past Paderborn in a 2-1 win.

Elsewhere, Schalke beat rivals Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the Ruhr Valley derby. Joel Marip and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored for Schalke, before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang halved the deficit for last season's runners-up.
