Brighton & Hove Albion 1-1 Cardiff City

David Marshall
Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall has been called up to the Scotland squad to face Poland and Georgia next month

Cardiff had goalkeeper David Marshall to thank as the managerless club held Brighton to a draw.

Marshall made a string of brilliant second-half saves to earn a point and frustrate Sami Hyypia's side.

Brighton took the lead when right-back Bruno lashed in a volley over the head of Marshall from wide on the right.

But Kenwyne Jones pulled Cardiff level a minute later with a brave header past David Stockdale, and Marshall then kept out Joe Bennett and Lewis Dunk.

Hyypia was happy with his side's best performance of the season but will wonder how they did not pick up a first league win in six.

After Bruno's long-range opener, Jones got the better of Stockdale to force home an instant response for Cardiff, who parted company with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer earlier this month.

Former Leyton Orient manager Russell Slade is expected to take over and was in the crowd watching Marshall's second-half show.

First the Scot saved a Kazenga LuaLua shot from the edge of the box which took a deflection, and then he pulled off a superb save to deny a diving header from Bennett and was at his best again to keep out Dunk from a corner.

A ferocious strike from Gary Gardner brought another decent save from the keeper low to his right and Bennett was denied again as the Bluebirds held on.

Cardiff joint caretaker manager Scott Young:

"We see David Marshall do this day in, day out in training.

"He is unbelievable at this level and would be among the top five or six in the top flight.

"It's been a tough week but I'm really pleased with the effort we've put in. We've taken five points out of nine so far and the lads' reaction has been first-class.

"We wanted to make us hard to beat when setting out and we certainly are now."

Brighton boss Sami Hyypia:

"This was our best performance of the season and that is why it is so frustrating.

"The players did a very good job and that is why I'm pleased. I do have a lot of faith in the team and the system; we've worked for three months at it."
