Blackburn Rovers 0-0 Huddersfield Town

Jordan Rhodes
Rhodes, who spent three years with Huddersfield, has scored four goals this season

Jordan Rhodes missed a penalty as Huddersfield hung on to earn a point against a wasteful Blackburn Rovers.

Rovers striker Rhodes fired wide against his former side with the best chance of the match in the second half after Grant Holt handled the ball.

But the hosts will rue numerous other missed chances in a game they bossed.

Terriers goalkeeper Alex Smithies made fine saves from Rhodes and Lee Williamson, while the visitors went close late on through Nahki Wells.

Wells headed a glorious opening wide with the goal at his mercy, but an away win for a rejuvenated Huddersfield would have been incredibly harsh on a Blackburn side who have now only managed one win in their last five games.

Rovers hold the upper hand
Blackburn are now unbeaten in the last nine meetings in all competitions, winning six. Huddersfield's last win was 3-2 at home in the old Division One in August 1999.

Blackburn created countless opportunities - particularly in the second half - but the visitors combined good luck with quality defending to ensure they have now lost just once in five games.

Wells did have a strike deflected wide after good work by Jack Robinson but Rovers were the more threatening.

Tom Cairney dragged a shot wide on the counter-attack, Joshua King nodded over when well placed and Grant Hanley's header just missed the target.

King also saw a header clip the top of the bar following a lovely lofted cross from Ben Marshall.

But Rhodes squandered the best of all their chances when he shot wide of the left-hand post after Holt's handball.

Rhodes forced Smithies into a smart save soon after as the home side began to pile on the pressure.

Smithies then produced a wonderful save after to parry Lee Williamson's fierce 15-yard strike and Craig Conway shot narrowly wide with another powerful effort.

And the keeper also kept out King's low strike before Wells wasted a chance to steal the points late on.

Blackburn manager Gary Bowyer: "Jordan Rhodes has won us loads of games since he's been here and he's going to win us loads more in the future. It's disappointing for the lad that he's missed it, but it wasn't just down to that. We've had enough goal attempts in the game to have won easily.

"There are a lot of positives for us to take. We're a young group and we're still learning about the Championship."

Huddersfield manager Chris Powell: "After the week we've had, seven points is a very good return for us, especially with two games away, this one and against Wolves on Wednesday, at very tricky places.

"The resilience and commitment from the players was there for all to see.

"I suppose with Jordan being an ex-Huddersfield player, we've earned that luck.

"It's a good week for us leading up to the international break and I've got to be very proud of their efforts today."
