Lenell John-Lewis holds his nerve from the penalty spot to spoil Wrexham's 150th birthday celebrations

Grimsby Town spoiled Wrexham's 150th anniversary by beating their hosts at the Racecourse Ground.

Grimsby took the lead when Mark Carrington brought down Aswad Thomas in the box and Lenell John-Lewis tucked the penalty into the corner of the net.

Elliott Durrell's second-half introduction off the bench sparked life into a strangely subdued Wrexham.

But the Dragons' hopes of a comeback ended when Louis Moult was sent off for a late challenge on Craig Disley.

More than 8,000 fans had turned up for the match in north Wales, a huge crowd for a Conference game.

Wrexham manager Kevin Wilkin told BBC Radio Wales: "To get such a fantastic gate and to play in the manner that we did for long spells of the first half was really disappointing.

"We came out and gave a better account of ourselves up until the sending off in the second half.

"We had Grimsby camped in and it's important you keep 11 men on the field.

"I didn't see what the sending off was for but on my understanding it was for a stamp, if that's the case we can't have any complaints."

Grimsby Town boss Paul Hurst told BBC Radio Humberside:

"I thought we handled the occasion well, with the exception of giving a corner away in the first 10 seconds.

"I thought we calmed the crowd down early on, got on the ball, played some good football and passed it quite well, and certainly looked a threat

"We missed a good chance through Jack Mackreth before we got the penalty and Lenny tucked one away very coolly"
