Swindon Town captain Nathan Thompson has signed a contract extension to keep him at the League One club until 2017.

The 23-year-old defender came through the youth ranks at the County Ground and has made 97 first-team appearances.

Thompson was made permanent skipper in the summer after taking the armband at the end of last season.

"I've spent 12 years at this club and to continue with the way I want to progress, it's important for me to stay here," he told BBC Wiltshire.

Swindon are currently second in League One, four points behind leaders Bristol City with a game in hand.

"When I lead the boys out in front of 8,000 fans every Saturday it's a fantastic feeling," added Thompson. "The unity we have in this team can push us forward and get us promotion this season."

Thompson, who would have been out of contract at the end of the season, attracted interest from both Peterborough and Leeds earlier this year.

"It's a massive sign for this club, that the leader of this group has decided to stay with us," Swindon chairman Lee Power added.

"Nathan had the opportunity to walk away on a free transfer at the end of this season, and probably go and earn double or treble what I'm paying him.

"It hopefully shows where this club is going. He's decided the only way he's going to earn double or treble is by leading this club into the Championship.

"We both feel we've got something special at this club at this moment in time."
