Bastien Hery grabbed a stoppage-time winner as Rochdale ended Swindon's nine-game unbeaten run in League One.
Anton Rodgers, son of Liverpool manager Brendan, put Town ahead in the first half with his first goal for the club.
Matty Lund headed the visitors level and Peter Vincenti then nodded in from a corner before being taken off with a serious-looking Achilles injury.
Michael Smith thought he had earned a point for Swindon from close range but they were denied by Hery's header.
Swindon Town manager Mark Cooper told BBC Wiltshire:
"It's a game we should have never lost. We looked very frail defensively.
"Every time a ball came in from a long ball or cross, we looked as though we were going to concede.
"The defenders have their markers and they let them have free headers.
"But when you're asking midfielders to play at the back then we are going to be a bit fragile."
