Hugo Rodallega scored twice as Fulham beat Charlton
Hugo Rodallega has scored five goals this season for Fulham

Caretaker manager Kit Symons boosted his chances of being named permanent Fulham boss as the Cottagers moved out of the Championship relegation zone with victory against Charlton.

Scott Parker, who came through the Addicks' youth ranks, smashed home the early opener, before Hugo Rodallega stabbed in a second soon after.

Charlton improved after the break, with George Tucudean seeing a shot saved.

However, Rodallega stroked home a third to seal a fifth win under Symons.

The former Wales defender has overseen an impressive upturn in form following a disastrous start to the season.

They had looked increasingly in danger of being cut off in the relegation zone under former boss Felix Magath, but are now up to 19th, three points clear of Birmingham in 22nd.

For Charlton, it was their second league defeat after going unbeaten in their first 11 games under manager Bob Peeters.

They barely had any time to find their rhythm in the opening stages against Fulham as Parker quickly made his mark against his former side.

The midfielder intercepted a poor pass and surged forward, before feeding the ball out to Ross McCormack, continued his run into the area and smashed the return pass into the roof of the Charlton net.

It got even better for the hosts minutes later when McCormack controlled a weak clearance in the middle of the area before driving a shot goalwards, that goalkeeper Stephen Henderson could only push towards Rodallega, who stabbed home.

Charlton were struggling to impose themselves on the home side, and barely managed a shot of note in the first half, but they improved after the break as striker Tucudean's close-range effort was pushed away by Fulham goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli, before Franck Moussa shot wide.

The introduction of teenage striker Karlan Ahearne-Grant further improved their attack as the 17-year-old had a shot blocked.

However, Rodallega got his second of the game when he sidefooted home from Lasse Vigen Christensen's ball to wrap up the win.

He limped off moments later, seemingly injuring himself while scoring, but Symons later reported the striker was fine.

Fulham caretaker manager Kit Symons:

"I haven't checked my phone yet but I am very confident I'll get it. It has to be getting more difficult, with the team winning games, for the five-man panel not to see the obvious thing to do for this football club.

"The chairman is over the week after next. I don't know what to expect, I understand the process but not when a decision will be made or how it will come about.

"Hopefully we'll find out sooner rather than later."

Charlton manager Bob Peeters:

"At half-time we changed the system and there was only one team on the pitch.

"If we score we are back in the game, and we had more attempts on goal than in our last five or six games put together.

"Everyone gave their maximum in the second half but it's about scoring the goals and that is what we lacked."
