Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid have only lost one league match this season

Atletico Madrid extended their unbeaten home run in La Liga to 24 matches with victory over Espanyol.

Tiago Mendes put the hosts ahead when he floated a header over keeper Kiko Casilla from Gabi Fernandez's pass.

The champions doubled their advantage in the second half as Mario Suarez tapped in from close range after Gimenez won a header from a corner.

Espanyol had one shot on target, and Atletico's Antoine Griezmann nearly made it 3-0 but his shot hit the post.

Victory means Diego Simeone's side remain five points behind leaders Barcelona and are fifth in the table.

Atletico have not lost a home La Liga game since being beaten 2-1 by Barcelona on 12 May 2013.

They are in action at the Vicente Calderon again on Wednesday, when they host Swedish side Malmo in a Champions League Group A tie.

Espanyol have only won two out of eight La Liga matches in 2014-15
